John Sifton, Esq.

John Sifton is an attorney with extensive experience in the non-profit sector. In addition to his law practice, John is the director of One World Research, a research firm that assists non-profits with research and advocacy, including the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, Human Rights First, and the Center for Constitutional Rights. From 2001 to 2007 he worked at Human Rights Watch as a researcher and senior researcher, traveling and working in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and throughout the Middle East and North Africa. He worked for the International Rescue Committee in 2000 and 2001, first in the General Counsel's office and later in Afghanistan and Pakistan. John also worked for Refugees International in 1999, in Albania and Kosovo. He has written extensively on human rights and humanitarian issues and published articles in the International Herald Tribune, Slate, Salon, and the New York Times Magazine and New York Times Book Review. Mr. Sifton is a graduate of New York University School of Law and St. John's College, Annapolis.

Scheherazade Salimi, Esq.

Since graduating from New York University School of Law and Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, Scheherazade has worked in a variety of settings in the private and public sectors. As a litigation associate at two New York City law firms, Scheherazade worked on projects ranging from complex anti-trust matters to suits involving major players in the financial services industry falling under anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism laws. Scheherazade also has extensive experience in the non-profit world, having worked on women and children's rights issues at UNICEF and at human rights advocacy organizations in New York and in India. Most recently, Scheherazade served as the counsel to the Education Committee at the New York City Council, where she drafted legislation and worked on a variety of public policy issues related to public education in New York City. Scheherazade did her undergraduate work at Columbia University.

Ann Thomas, Esq.

Ann's practice primarily focuses on providing legal counsel and advocacy to nonprofit organizations and small businesses. She brings a unique perspective to her client matters: she is the owner of a small business, has recent experience as an attorney serving non-profit organizations, has served as the CEO and President of a New York nonprofit organization and on the boards of several nonprofit organizations throughout the United States, and has worked with various governmental agencies as a regulator.

After graduating magna cum laude from Western New England College School of Law, Ann was a law clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where she worked on an array of civil and criminal issues. As a Legislative Attorney for the New York City Council, she developed and negotiated innovative legislation concerning health care, the elderly and public corruption. Later, Ann obtained her LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center, where she specialized in tax matters affecting estate planning, small businesses, and tax-exempt organizations and participated in an externship at the U.S. Senate Finance Committee that focused on tax-exempt entities. Thereafter, Ann worked as an Associate at two District of Columbia-based law firms, renowned for their work with tax exempt organizations. Ann is admitted in New York and the District of Columbia. She has co-authored numerous articles pertaining to the nonprofit sector.
